I dig it HD - iPad
Motherload is a flash game released a few years ago in which the player controls a drilling machine on Mars, digging deeper and deeper, while collecting gems and other items to upgrade themselves and buy items. Later, InMotion Software (not the makers of Motherload) took this idea and improved upon it, in the form of I Dig It for iPhone. More recently, they’ve created a sequel, I Dig It Expeditions. Now, this amazing game comes to the iPad, combining the content of both games, and adding a little extra. In I Dig It HD, you play as a drilling machine set to work in five different landscapes, a farm, the Amazon, an ocean, Antarctica, and an iPad-exclusive, a cave in Europe. Each map has different objectives, different “diggins,” and some unique features. For example, the Amazon map requires you to find 5 artifacts, then rescue a professor from the hull-damaging giant ants who dwell under the surface. In the ocean map, instead of fuel, you must have oxygen, and there are air vents underwater that can blow you around and obstruct your path. In addition to the basic campaign mode mentioned above, there are various challenges (scenarios), a collection of the various “diggins” you collect, and even a level editor. To control your digger, there is an analog stick on the right side of the screen, by default. (you may move it to the left if you wish) It is pretty comfortable to use, and is very accurate. On the left side of the screen your item inventory is shown, where you can keep bombs, teleports, and other items. On the top left is a radar circle, which is viewable while moving, unlike the iPhone version, which requires you to pause the game. The radar makes the game much easier and much less frustrating. Before you could damage your hull by falling too far and landing suddenly, but now you can lift right before hitting the bottom of your tunnel. In the Amazon, you can see where the ants are, shown as moving red dots in your tunnels. Along with the radar, the large screen makes navigating your tunnels and finding valuable “diggins” require less guessing. To the right of the radar is a series of gauges, showing temperature, fuel, and hull. On the right side of the screen is a marker showing your elevation. Compared to Motherload, and even the other I Dig It games, the graphics I Dig It HD are spectacular. Every single part of the game, from the interfaces in the shop to the pop-ups asking to start a new game, fit the old-fashioned adventure theme. Even the dirt has intricate patterns, and the app obviously utilizes the iPad’s large screen very well from a graphics standpoint. Everything fits the theme, and the game feels made for iPad, not just ported over. If you play through every single level and mode of the game, which a fan of the game will, you’ll have well over 10 hours of play time. The level editor adds even more content. You can choose the type of terrain, and place obstacles and “diggins” one by one, or choose the frequency and depth of certain items, and have the randomizer handle the rest. In addition to the creation and sharing capabilities of the level editor, it has 3 downloadable alternate campaigns from the developer, with more coming soon. In all amazing games, there is usually at least one small flaw. In I Dig It HD, that flaw is a glitch that occurs when teleporting down to the bottom of your tunnel system. When doing so, you are unable to move up or down, which renders the teleport useless. However, if you go to the main menu, then resume your game, the glitch is fixed, at least for that teleport. This doesn’t taint my opinion of the game though, since I suspect a fix is on the way. Overall, I Dig It HD is a wonderful game. While it doesn’t have tons of variety, I could play it for a long time very easily, though it eats battery relatively fast (for an iPad). Even though the price might seem high, it is even worth the high price tag. It is very highly recommended
